Eric Ravilious: Letter Makers. Colour lithograph. Preliminary design for High Street, 1937. 245 x 180mm. Ravilious first 3 experiments for High Street were published in Signature in March 1937. As can be seen from the published image of the 1938 High Street plate attached, the design underwent some marked colour changes, both in the the shop window & surrounding area, including the removal of the radiating lines in front of the step. This print benefits from Signature’s larger page format, giving it the wide margins that are lacking in the book prints. As less of these prints were issued than the book ones, they are scarcer too.
